Leicester-raised artist, SOFY, picked up a pen and started work on her collection of songs just 12 months ago. The 24-year-old threw herself headfirst into music after being placed on furlough, and her hip-hop inspired indie-pop bops quickly earned her recognition among top industry tastemakers such as Clara Amfo, Jess Iszatt, & Gemma Bradley.
SOFY was runner up in the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge's nationwide talent search following over 10,000+ applicants - selected as the most promising new artist in London, with over 4,000 entries from the capital alone. Listed as one of Bonded's 2022 Artists To Watch we chatted with SOFY to talk about all things music, Christmas and her latest single 'Antifreeze and Chocolate Biscuits'.

How did you find your passion for creating music?
I’ve always liked making noise, I used to rope my little brother into putting on shows for my parents in our living room when we were kids, and music has always been a big part of my life. But I only really got into it seriously when I was furloughed during the pandemic. I decided to try writing songs, totally fell in love with it and never looked back!
Describe your sound in a sentence.
Imagine Lily Allen and Easy Life walk into a pub, Blur are behind the bar and Outkast are on the decks, and that’s the SOFY vibe!
What was the process and vision behind your latest track ‘Antifreeze & Chocolate Biscuits’
It kind of came about by accident haha. I wrote it with Robb and Amie known as Gold Spectacles on the hottest day in September because they had driven up from Somerset, but accidentally forgot all their recording equipment so we couldn’t work on the track we had planned. We just had an acoustic guitar and the piano and someone suggested writing a Christmas song as a joke and then we just got a bit carried away.

You mention a variety of gifts in your latest song, what is the weirdest Christmas gift you’ve ever received?
A few years ago I was working in a chalet in France and one of the guests gave me half a packet of ham and a jaeger bottle full of piss, if that counts.
Seasons greetings I guess haha... Still on the topic of Christmas, what is your favourite Christmas Song?
Stop The Cavalry by Jona Lewie.
Out of the tracks you have released so far, which one is your favourite and why?
Lads! Lads! Lads! is my favourite, I love the lyrics and it’s the best song to play live because everyone gets involved and it’s super boisterous and fun.

You've already gained the attention of the likes of Sam Fender, Arlo Parks and more, who are the top 3 artists you dream to collaborate with?
This is hard because there’s loads! But top three would probably be Easy Life coz I think we’d have fun, Matt Maltese coz I love his lyrics and maybe Damon Albarn because he’s such a legend!
And finally, the new year is approaching, what does 2022 look like for SOFY?
My EP is out in February and we have our first headline show in March which I’m gassed about. Other than that, just world domination I guess!
