How did you first get into DJing, and what inspired you to pursue it?

I got into DJing during lockdown, a lot of people I was around were bad boi DJs and I just grew very fond of the art form, my fellow creatives inspire me and seeing more women / non binary DJs is essential for the scene. I am a musician as well so that also played a strong part in my choice to become a DJ.

What's your favorite part about being a DJ, especially as a woman in a typically male-dominated industry?

My favorite part is finding new bangers, new sounds, and connecting with people . Even the shaky transitions are important for growth. I'm not perfect and have grown so much as a DJ throughout the years and hope to inspire other people to do the same.

Every industry is male dominated but it doesn’t stop me from shining and telling them to get off the decks aha!

Can you share any memorable or challenging experiences you've had while DJing events or gigs?

I’d say the lack of care for DJs , we create the vibe and set the scene but a lot of the time there’s no real acknowledgement unless you are bait or well known. There've been numerous occasions where I’ve played for the whole night and the artists would get a warm welcome but as the DJ I didn’t even get offered a glass of water or a thank you, the cheek!

How do you approach building your sets and selecting music for different audiences or venues?

I used to plan my sets before each time, then realized I always work better going with the flow. So I organize a playlist of songs I want to play on the night and do my research about the event to see what genres are typically played, but also I play what I want!!

Are there any particular DJs, female or otherwise, who have influenced your style or approach to DJing?

There are so many DJs I can shout out , I’d say when I first started i was obsessed with BAMBII she’s a producer, fashion icon and selecta from Canada. I really like her approach to her sets and the crowds she attracts, it’s giving black excellence.

Shout out to my Birmingham crew as well. The female DJs are next level and I’m consistently inspired by them all!

What equipment and software do you prefer to use when DJing, and why?

I have a Traktor controller so I would say I enjoy using Traktor, but the more I’ve been DJing out at venues I prefer to use Rekordbox as it’s more convenient, you just need to remember your headphones and USB.

Can you tell us about any upcoming projects or collaborations you're excited about?

I’m the second half of @Twotwoevents and we have a few exciting line ups planned for the year. I can’t say too much but stay tuned!

What advice would you give to aspiring female DJs who are looking to break into the industry?

Be yourself, don’t compare, play what you want! Be ready for rejections and don’t be scared to ask for favors! Closed mouths don’t get fed and anytime I’ve asked to DJ at an event nine times out of ten they’ve contacted me in the future to do just that.

And be nice to other females / non binary DJs as well it doesn’t cost a thing!!!
